A Canberra man’s weekend getaway to the south coast didn’t go as planned after police caught in a risky position with his girlfriend next to his red BMW.

A Canberra man has received a two-year community corrections order after being caught with drugs and prohibited weapons while in the middle of a sex act with his girlfriend while on weekend getaway near Tathra.

Nigel Jeffrey Ross-Barlow, 41, pleaded guilty in Bega Local Court on October 13 to possessing cannabis, methylamphetamines, a prohibited stun gun tactical torch, commercial slingshot a credit card knife, almost $3000 in cash believed to be from the proceeds of crime and erectile dysfunction medication without a prescription.

“We get all sorts of things bought on the internet. That’s the internet, it’s unregulated,” Magistrate Doug Dick said in relation to the prohibited weapons.

Court documents reveal police arrested Ross-Barlow, from Gowrie in the ACT, on July 14 at Mogareeka near Tathra on the Far South Coast after witnessing him engaged in a sexual act with his girlfriend beside his parked red BMW coupe.

The woman has not been accused of any wrongdoing and has not been charged.

Both Ross-Barlow and his girlfriend admitted to recently using drugs, and during a subsequent search of his vehicle, police located 27 $50 notes in a jacket, which he claimed was payment from his job as a stone mason.

A further $1445 in cash was found in his bumbag, which he claimed was given to him by his mother. His mother later initially denied giving him the money.

Police also located 18.1 grams of cannabis, 2.58 grams of methylamphetamines, two scales and eight tablets of the prescription drug Stallegra Ross-Barlow claimed to have bought at a Fyshwick sex shop.

Ross-Barlow claimed he purchased the electronic stun gun, disguised as a torch, for protection.

He told police he did not know it was an offence to carry a knife and the commercial slingshot.

Magistrate Dick also ordered Ross-Barlow to complete 150 hours of community service with supervision and fined him $2200.
