A colossal retirement village development has been officially approved by a state government body after years of meetings, with the multimillion-dollar, residential project set for a small, south coast town.

The ‘Milton Meadows’ senior housing development, with a staggering price tag of $91m, has been approved by the NSW Regional Planning Panel for 267 Princes Hwy, Milton.

The ambitious plans showcase a 16,000-square-metre development, featuring the construction of an 89-bed residential aged care facility, 65 duplex and triplex homes for independent living and seven, three-storey residential buildings to house 133 apartments.

Documents tendered to the development application state the housing project was expected to bring more than 350 seniors to the coastal town, located 227km south of Sydney.

Sydney-based and private development firm, Annsca Property Group, originally submitted the massive planning proposal to Shoalhaven Council in October 2019, and, following a litany of meetings with council and the NSW Regional Planning Panel, the mega development was approved at a recent determination meeting.

“The development will feature a mix of seniors housing typologies, a clubhouse, medical centre, a gym, communal open space, all weather access swimming pool and a variety of spaces that can be used for recreational meetings and social get-togethers by the residents and their families,” an Annsca Property Group spokesman said.

“The overall aim of this project is to increase the quality and quantity of seniors housing available in the south coast, specifically in the Shoalhaven Local Government Area.

“The development will provide for a range of housing types to service the needs of an ageing population and will be connected to a range of services and facilities on site to meet the needs of the new residents and ensure the site does not adversely increase demand on existing services in Milton.”

Dozens of submissions were submitted by the Milton community during the project’s public exhibition phase early last year, with some for the development and some against.

John Ellerton lives directly across from the land where ‘Milton Meadows’ will be constructed.

He objected the development on the grounds of issues created by higher traffic congestion.

“No work, repeat, no work should be done,” he said.

Meanwhile, other residents shared their support for the development, including Ulladulla resident Maree Walsh-Harris, who said the project would address the need for more senior housing in the area.

“What a great opportunity for the Ulladulla, Milton area to have this facility available for our ageing community,” she said.

“Looking forward to seeing this come out of the ground.”

Construction is expected to begin in the coming months.
