A Moruya man will be sentenced next month after he was found asleep in his car next to a machete.

Marc Anthony Jessop, 47, of Moruya will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty in Bega Local Court on October 27 to the possession of a knife in a public place, giving a false name to police, resisting police and possessing 4.8 grams of cannabis.

His solicitor did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused by Magistrate Doug Dick.

Court documents reveal police found Jessop asleep in his blue Holden Commodore on Loftus Street in Bemboka, with the engine still on, at 11pm on September 27, parked near the town’s post office.

After being woken by police, Jessop told them his name was “Robert”, before police identified him by his tattoos after a radio identification check.

Jessop then shrugged off police as he was being arrested and after a short foot pursuit was placed in the back of the police vehicle and taken to Bega Police station where he refused a formal interview.

The rusty, 40 centimetre long machete was found between the driver’s seat and door of Jessop’s car during a subsequent search of the vehicle.

Jessop has also pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, the possession of a prohibited weapon, possessing cannabis, supplying a small amount of cannabis, possessing a knife at the Ultra Service Station in Mogo, and escaping police custody after he was pulled over in the same car on October 9 for failing to meet his bail obligations, and taken into custody.

Documents state Jessop failed to appear at Moruya Police Station on October 7, claiming he was in a car crash at Braidwood.

He has pleaded not guilty to being in the possession of an allegedly stolen Mercury outboard motor and Makita radio. He has also pleaded not guilty to negligent driving, not giving his particulars to another driver and driving while disqualified after an alleged crash at Cobargo on the same night he was arrested with the machete at Bemboka.

He has also pleaded not guilty to driving while disqualified and taking part in a police pursuit on May 26 at Coopers Gully north of Bega.

Police allege Jessop has been disqualified from driving until September, 2024, and allegedly failed to stop at around 2pm when they attempted to pull him over on the Princes Highway.

They allege he was driving in a “manner dangerous to others” during the pursuit.

Jessop will be sentenced in Bega Local Court on November 24.
