A grieving mother has revealed the heartbreaking moment she tried to save her son after he was allegedly stabbed to death during a violent altercation on the NSW South Coast.

Penny Gray revealed how she came to her son’s aid in his final moments after he was fatally stabbed in the torso, allegedly by Stephen Francis Walker, during an “argument” about 5.45pm on April 20 at the intersection of Brereton St and Moss St in Nowra.

“I tried to save him, we gave him mouth to mouth but it was too late,” she said.

Ms Gray said she was in “shock” and “devastated”.

“He loved his motorbikes, he loved his stunts, he did them well,” she said, remembering her son.

“I’m still trying to get it all sunk in. I have my moments but I just need to keep busy.”

At a press conference on Monday, Chief Inspector David Cockram said said police did a “fantastic” job responding to the incident.

“He is locked up now shortly after the incident, and I call that a win,” he said.

Walker was arrested shortly after the alleged stabbing and charged with murder at Nowra police Station.

He was refused bail by police, before declining to apply for bail through his solicitor Matthew Ward at Parramatta Bail Court on Monday.

Magistrate Ray Plibersek endorsed a warrant for mental health to be provided to Walker, who will be referred to Justice Health for an assessment.

Mr Gray has also been remembered as a “beautiful” father, brother, and son, with a passion for dirt bikes.

“Unfortunately on what was meant to be a beautiful Easter long weekend spent with family and friends, ended in what could only be described as a scene for a horror movie, 100 metres from his home he was (allegedly) murdered,” Bella Clark said in an online fundraiser.

“Hundreds of people are left speechless and in shock to know that their strong and great friend had their life (allegedly) stolen.”

Ms Clark has since created a GoFundMe to raise money to help Mr Gray’s family pay for his funeral, and “any other support the family might need in these heavy times”.

A Moss St resident, who wished to remain nameless, told this publication of the alleged “horrendous” and “wicked” situation.

“I heard screaming and ran out and they were right there, he (allegedly) smashed into my fence,” the resident said.

The resident said they tried to help Mr Gray, but he was allegedly dead by the time he got to him.

Other residents told this publication of hearing screaming down the street, before hearing a number of sirens and seeing the road closed off.

Walker’s case was adjourned to Nowra Local Court on June 17.
