A tragic crash has seen a cyclist killed before-dawn at Nowra on Friday, with the first responder speaking out about the “horrible scenes” he witnessed.

Sydney truck driver Chad Scott was turning onto Kalander St about 5.30am right after the cyclist, who is yet to be formally identified, was hit by the car.

“I stopped and tried to render assistance but he was already deceased,” Mr Scott told this publication.

The truck driver, who was badly affected by what he saw, said other witnesses at the scene who also attempted to render assistance saw the man begin riding across the highway when the car heading south hit him.

“I’ve had to come home from work, it was just so terrible,” he said. “Horrible scenes.”

NSW Ambulance and police shortly after attended the scene, where they treated the 51-year-old driver of the car involved in the crash, before he was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital for mandatory testing.

The fatal crash occurred at 5.30am on the Princes Hwy, at the Kandalar St intersection in Nowra.

The tragic incident has sparked calls for the intersection to be made safer for cyclists, with bike rider Evan McHuan suggesting a dedicated bike path be made at the busy highway.

“Any highway is dangerous for cyclists, but this intersection is a particularly busy one and whenever I’m riding near it, I always take so much more caution,” he said.

Mr McHuan said dedicated bike paths would improve the safety of the area and avoid dangerous crashes.

“I don’t know the full details of what happened this morning, but when I heard the news that a cyclist had died at the intersection, I was unfortunately not surprised,” he said.

The Princes Hwy was closed for sometime following the tragic events, with diversions put in place. The road has since reopened.

A crime scene was established following the crash and NSW police have asked anyone with information regarding the crash to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or their website.
