A former Scoutmaster is set to be sentenced four decades after he sexually assaulted a boy scout on a two-month-long camping trip on the NSW south coast, touching, pulling and rubbing his genitalia under his sleeping bag.
The historic offence saw Glen Coster, 63, wind up in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, having previously pleaded guilty to two counts of sexually assaulting and committing indecent assault on a child.
Documents tendered to the court reveal Coster – a 22-year-old Scoutmaster at the time of the offence – took the victim who was 14 at the time – and three other young boys on a camping trip in his mini-van from their home in Loch, Victoria, up and around NSW between December 1982 and February 1983.
The trip saw them visit Canberra and Sydney before they headed south to Batemans Bay on the south coast.
However, agreed facts reveal Coster sexually assaulted the 14-year-old boy scout while the group stayed at a caravan park in the coastal town.
Agreed facts state a night in December 1982, Coster placed his hand down the 14-year-old boy’s sleeping bag, slipping his fingers into his underpants, playing with the boy’s genitalia, rubbing and pulling them.
The actions woke the boy, who uncomfortably “groaned and stirred”, causing Coster to remove his hand.
Documents note the young boy did not mention the offence during the camping trip, which continued.
However, later in the trip, Coster again placed his hand down the sleeping bag of the 14-year-old boy, this time touching the boy’s anus.
The young boy stirred and groaned, causing the 22-year-old to remove his hand.
Agreed facts state, in an attempt to protect himself, the boy scout pulled the sleeping bag up to his neck, however Coster began rubbing the boy’s genitalia through the fabric of the bag.
The next morning, the group returned to their homes in Victoria where documents reveal the young man kept the offences to himself for 34 years.
Documents reveal it wasn’t until 2017 when the former boy scout told his wife, parents and brother about the camping trip.
The matter was reported to Victorian Police the same year and after six years of extensive investigations, Coster, now 63, was contacted and charged by the NSW Police.
Coster appeared in Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, accompanied by his daughter, expecting to be sentenced, however his lawyer Geoffrey Knox asked the court for a final adjournment to allow for a sentencing assessment report to be completed.
“We are also waiting for a psychological report to be completed, but this is taking some time,” he said.
Magistrate Doug Dick did not oppose the request, noting a sentencing assessment report was important for this type of offence.
“This report will open and close sentencing options,” he said.
Coster will return to Batemans Bay Local Court on April 8 for sentencing.
