A Moruya father with 147 offences on his record has been sent to prison after viciously attacking his girlfriend, giving her a black eye in a “serious display of violence”.

The incident saw Gavin Bond, 34, wind up in Batemans Bay Local Court on Friday on charges of assault occasioning in actual bodily harm, contravene apprehended violence order (AVO), goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, possess housebreaking implements, custody of knife in public place and drug possession.

After pleading not guilty to all charges, Bond was found guilty following a hearing in the same court last week.

The court heard during sentencing on Friday that Bond, who had been in custody since his arrest, bashed his girlfriend despite her being protected by him by an AVO.

Documents tendered to the court reveal on June 14, Bond attended his partner’s Moruya home despite legally not being allowed to.

The court heard the violence began when Bond’s partner asked him to leave, resulting in the Moruya man hitting his partner multiple times resulting in a cut to her face and a black eye.

Following reports of the incident, Batemans Bay police began investigating and visited Bond at his Moruya home 12 days after the incident.

When police arrested him at his home, officers searched the property and found three large knives, bupe strips, diazepam and tools believed to be used for breaking into homes.

Bond was charged and taken into custody.

In court on Friday, Bond’s lawyer said the violence he displayed stemmed from a “disrupted upbringing”.

“[Bond] was exposed to violence at a young age,” she said. “Some of his experiences as a young boy are not so different from the violence we’re hearing about today.”

Bond’s lawyer also submitted her client had two young sons and was working at rehabilitation to be a better father for them.

She asked Magistrate Doug Dick to consider his tough upbringing and his willingness to change when sentencing.

Bond was sentenced to 20 months in prison, eight months without parole.

However, Mr Dick said, while it was good to see a wanting for change, Bond had a “dreadful” record.

“Your record has 147 sentencing matters on it,” he said. “A lot are for assault, 43 are for dishonesty charges. This really does not help your case.”

When sentencing, Mr Dick said he had to consider the criminal record and the new “vicious” attack.

“What you did was traumatic and demeaning,” he said.

Bond was convicted on all charges, fined a total of $1200 and sentenced to 20 months in full time custody, eight months without parole.
