A simple walk around a NSW south coast national park has turned deadly over the weekend, after the body of a young man was found dead in the ocean following an extensive search.

NSW Police and Marine Rescue Eden with Water Police began searching for 20-year-old Hang Xue off Eden on Friday afternoon after he was last seen at 12.30pm at Lennards Island in the Beowa National Park.

The search continued on Saturday morning with Marine Rescue Merimbula and Water Police on Saturday morning about 10am.

Mr Xue’s family contacted police after he went for a walk around the national park, losing contact with him.

At the time of the disappearance, police and Mr Xue’s family’s concerns were heightened due to his poor English and inability to swim.

The search paused on Friday evening due to poor conditions before it continued on Saturday morning about 10.30am, where Mr Xue’s body was located 1.8 nautical miles northeast of Lennards Island.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Glenn Sullivan said volunteer crews were deployed on XRAY 30 and Merimbula 31 helping Water Police.

It took the teams only one hour on Saturday morning to find the body.

NSW Police said a report was now being prepared for the coroner.

Mr Xue’s family have not released a statement since the discovery.
