A man has been killed after a tragic crash on a major highway in the state’s south.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Percy Davis Dr and the Princes Hwy, north of Moruya, at 5.50am after reports a Holden Colorado ute had lost control and crashed.

NSW Police has confirmed the driver, a 25-year-old man, died at the scene.

A police spokesman said the crime scene was ongoing and the ute, which was badly damaged, was yet to be removed.

“It is in the middle of nowhere, so it is going to take a while,” he said.

The highway remains closed in both directions, however traffic is flowing through a diverted route down Broulee Rd, George Bass Dr and North Head Dr.

Traffic controllers on the scene said it was too early to tell how long the highway would remain closed.

“We’re in a lucky situation here having Broulee Rd, because without it, traffic would be banked up right down the highway, especially at this time of day,” a traffic controller said. “This whole situation is just tragic.”

Officers from South Coast Police District have established a crime scene and the highway remains closed with local traffic diversions in place.

An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
