A child groomed and emotionally manipulated during a two-year online relationship with a man on the protection register, has shared her trauma years on, revealing how his “depraved” messages have severely impacted her life.

Cody Bloxsome’s victim was a minor when the Nowra man began an online relationship with her in 2021, using multiple social media platforms to speak with the girl, requesting sexual images, as well as sending her abusive and “emotionally manipulative” messages.

The 26-year-old man sat in prison greens when dialling into the Nowra District Court on Tuesday from custody where he cried as his victim bravely told the court how he affected her life.

Bloxsome – who was on the NSW Child Protection Register for unrelated offences at the time of the offending – previously pleaded guilty to five counts of use carriage service to solicit child abuse material, two counts of fail to comply with reporting obligations and one count of use carriage service to transmit child abuse material to himself.

Documents tendered to the court reveal Bloxsome’s online relationship with the girl took place between January 2021 and February 2023.

The documents state he asked the girl to send him sexual content on multiple occasions. Bloxsome gave the girl specific instructions, such as “I want it done in a quiet place so I can hear u and see u and hear u cry and watch u cry”.

The court heard the victim’s mother found the messages in 2021, before warning the 26-year-old to cease contact with her daughter – a demand he ignored.

It wasn’t until early 2023 police arrested and charged Bloxsome following an investigation.

He was refused bail, remaining at the Parklea Correctional Centre since.

Bloxsome’s victim cried as she told the court on Tuesday she was “grateful” for his arrest.

“I feel angry at him, I thought what happened was my fault,” she said.

“It made me feel like I deserved to have bad things happen to me.”

The victim said she now struggled mentally, stating she had major trust issues.

“I am worried this will happen again and I am worried for other young people,” she said.

“I felt disgusted; I was a happy kid.

“I will never go back to being the young and innocent kid I once was.”

Defence barrister Ben Hart said his client was aware the offending was “depraved” and accepted he would be spending some time in custody as a result.

“He has been taking every program he can while in custody,” he said.

He mentioned how Bloxsome also intended to complete a child sex offence program in prison once he was sentenced.

“The male brain doesn’t fully develop until your mid to late 20s,” Mr Hart said.

“You can see from his reaction today that he is remorseful.

“He can only now really reflect on what he’s done.”

Crown prosecutor Silas Morrison said rehabilitation would be needed as part of Bloxsome’s sentence, given his young age.

Judge Christopher O’Brien adjourned the case for sentencing in the Sydney District Court on December 18.
