A massive 9.2 hectare marina has been planned for a small town bay on the NSW south coast, with residents raising concerns around the impact the proposal would have on the community.

The fate of a multimillion-dollar plan for a massive new marina to be built at Cattle Bay on the state’s south coast is in the hands of a NSW Planning Panel, which will meet to decide on the proposal next month.

The $6.4 million development application for a 154-berth marina, earmarked to include three floating pontoon arms, an administration building and 97-space car park, was submitted to Bega Valley Council for Cattle Bay Rd, Eden, in June last year.

A planner for Eden Cattle Bay Marina said the development would take up 9.2 hectares of water within Twofold Bay.

Previous plans for the marina were first approved by the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel in December 2015, however, the proposal has lapsed.

“The objectives that have guided the proposal are to deliver a marina and significant piece of maritime infrastructure for Eden that will generate economic and community benefits,” the planner said.

“To be a catalyst for stimulating further investment in tourism, maritime and boating, and land

development activities with benefits that flow through the local economy and community.”

Community feedback on the plans raised concerns around the potential pollution of Cattle and Twofold bays, as well as a lack of sewer pump facilities for the size of the proposal.

However, the planner said the proposal provided water management measures to address issues.

The Biodiversity and Conservation Division of the Planning Department said the proposal did not adequately assess the impact the proposal would have on Aboriginal cultural heritage or coastal processes.

The Southern Regional Planning Panel will determine the proposal at Eden Fishermen’s on April 1.
