A south coast man has been handed a hefty fine after drunkenly destroying a pokie machine at a popular south coast club.
Jaryn Doran, 21, of Broulee, pleaded guilty in Moruya Local Court on Friday to a charge of destroy or damage property.
Police documents presented to Magistrate Doug Dick stated Doran visited Moruya Golf Club on the night of December 3, 2022, with his family.
The group entered the club and refused to sign in, walking straight past reception into the pokie machine room.
The reception worker followed the group and informed them they had to leave.
The group agreed, but Doran became aggravated once the worker went back to their desk.
Described in the documents as “drunk”, Doran used his right elbow to hit the screen of the pokie machine twice, cracking it “beyond use”.
After smashing the machine, he left the club with his family.
The court heard the worker returned to the pokie machine room, finding the smashed equipment before contacting police.
Police arrived and viewed the CCTV footage of the family, seeing Doran commit the drunken act.
On December 15, 2022, police attended Doran’s Broulee residence and questioned him about the night.
Doran’s mother, who lives in the same home, “informed police it was her son”. He was later given a court attendance notice.
Moruya Golf club has since fixed the pokie machine at a cost of $3000.
Solicitor Adam Sumbak, who represented Doran, said his client “agrees with me it was an idiotic act”.
“Clearly these actions were impulsive and under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
“He is remorseful.”
Doran, nodding his head, told Magistrate Dick “It was stupid”.
Magistrate Dick agreed, “Yes, it was”.
“This was nothing more than mindless vandalism.”
Magistrate Dick convicted Doran and fined him $1000. He must also pay $3000 in compensation to Moruya Golf Club within seven days.
