A Nowra woman who was caught breaking into a South Coast high school has been granted bail to attend rehab.

Bronwynne Lee Whyte, 35, pleaded guilty to breaking into St John’s the Evangelist Catholic High School in Nowra in the company of two other men.

She entered her plea to one count of aggravated break and enter in company during a bail application at Nowra Local Court on Monday, July 27. Charges of break and enter dwelling and face blackened or disguised with intent to commit serious indictable offence were withdrawn.

According to documents tendered to the court, Whyte, her co-accused and an unknown man, entered the bottom of ‘H’ block at the Nowra high school about 10pm on Sunday, May 17.

Whyte removed items from draws, cupboards and cabinets including some first aid kit supplies.

A locked cabinet was also forced open by “unknown means”. Her co-accused allegedly removed office equipment including 41 USB drives, batteries and $58.55 in notes and loose change.

Meanwhile a security alarm was set off, documents state.

A security guard arrived and saw the accused before calling police. After police arrived, officers found the trio and arrested Whyte and her co-accused. An unknown got away from police, the documents said.

Shortly after the arrest, both Whyte and her co-accused said they were “threatened” and “forced” to break into the school after a man known only as “Andrew” pointed a gun at them.

During the arrest, police removed first aid kit supplies from Whyte’s handbag. Further investigations lead to police finding text messages, alleging Whyte had planned to break into the school after a fast food fix.

“We just heading down to Hungry Jacks to get a feed then thinking about hitting St Johns,” shortly followed by “But we (sic) coming home first after Hungry Jacks, but yeah for sure you can come on trek to St Johns”.

During an interview in custody, Whyte said to police the messages were sent by a man named “Andrew” who was using her phone, the documents said.

Magistrate Erin Kennedy granted Whyte bail to attend full-time rehabilitation at Healing House, Sydney.

“Rehabilitation programs are fantastic but they’re hard,” she said to Whyte who was appearing via AVL.

The matter was adjourned to November 2.
