An arterial bridge on the busy Princes Hwy has been “compromised” after an early morning truck crash on the far South Coast, with traffic being reduced to only a single lane for “some time”.

Emergency services responded to reports a log truck had jackknifed, becoming wedged between both lanes of the Princes Hwy on Brogo Bridge, near Cobargo, at around 4.30am on April 26.

Local RFS units arrived at the scene shortly after, and applied first aid to the driver who was taken by ambulance to Southeast Regional Hospital in Bega for assessment.

Hazmat crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Eden with assistance from RFS Brogo units assisted in mopping up a resulting fuel spill, with absorbing pads being placed on the bridge to soak up excess diesel.

The crash caused traffic to grind to a standstill on Tuesday, and continuing into Wednesday, with only a single lane operational due to damage to abutting guard rails.

According to FRNSW, the damage resulting from the crash had “compromised” the bridge and would require work major work to repair. Work, they warned, would take some time.

As of Thursday, traffic conditions were still in place, with stop and slow traffic controls instigated.
