Plans for a $6 million unit complex in the heart of Merimbula will offer stylish living with waterfront views if approved.

Applicant and owner Poly Homes has submitted a development application to Bega Valley Shire Council to build 15 apartments and shops at 21 Beach Street.

The residential apartments are a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom, in a three-storey complex.

A commercial space will be on the ground floor at the front of the property on the state’s Far South Coast.

The vacant block sits to the east of the Crown Apartments and south of the Capri Apartments with footpaths on either side of Beach Street providing pedestrian access to the town centre or Spencer Park and Merimbula Public School.

Community Environment and Planning director Alice Howe said the council welcomed investment in Merimbula.

“An important element of this planning framework is to bring vitality and housing diversity to our town centres through shop-top housing, however it is important to note that all development applications are assessed on their merits,” she said.

Ms Howe said the council’s vision for the Merimbula CBD was to enhance the existing coastal atmosphere as a vibrant seaside destination with a mixture of commercial and residential land uses.

“We require external funding to deliver this vision and welcome the contribution that the private sector can make,” she said.

Plans, developed by Habitat Planning, also acknowledge the lift shaft, which residents can use to access apartments and the carpark, breaches the 10-metre height restrictions for development in the area.

“With the exception of the lift shaft, the proposal does not exceed 10 metres in height and is therefore generally compliant with the provisions of this clause.”
