A south coast shopfront home to a collectables store and barber shop could soon undergo colossal change to allow the addition of a restaurant and bar.
The Eurobodalla Council will consider whether to tick off the near-$500,000 project involving building two entirely new floors on top of the existing structure.
Currently, the one-storey building at 266 Beach Rd, Batehaven houses the barbers and the shop named Pick a Present.
A development application has been submitted to the coastal council by Candor Town Planning on behalf of Christopher John Blacka.
Documents outlining the mega-proposal reveal the construction of the two new floors, a roof terrace, function room, amenities, a lift and stairs.
A Candor Town Planning spokesman confirmed the new floors would be built for a restaurant and bar, if the project is approved.
The spokesman said no specific business or food type had yet been earmarked, but the new space would be leased out once opened.
It’s aimed to have the restaurant operating between 11am-2pm for lunch and 5-8pm for dinner seven days a week, the spokesman said.
But the hours “may vary during peak periods and depending on the tenants requirements”.
“Staff numbers will depend on the requirements of the tenants, but it is anticipated that five staff members will be required,” the spokesman said.
“This may increase during peak periods.”
The spokesman said construction would not affect existing businesses, despite the “part demolition” of rooms outlined for the project.
“The proposed alterations and additions to existing commercial shops to create food and drink premises will alter the existing shops at ground level, but it is anticipated that the tenancy will not be impacted,” he said.
This publication visited current tenants to see if they had been made aware of plans and the possibility of changes during construction, but they did not comment.
Continuing, the spokesman said the site in the growing commercial industry around the Batemans Bay regio. was “appropriate” for the proposal.
“The proposal is consistent with the character of the Batehaven commercial centre, and its locality” he said.
“The proposal as submitted is compliant and has merit and it is recommended that the development be approved.”
The application with the council is on public exhibition until September 24.
