Two Lake Macquarie police officers required hospital treatment after what should have been a routine stop yesterday.
The plain clothes officers were driving an unmarked car when they attempted to stop a Nissan Patrol 4WD on Lake St, Windale about 5pm.
Once both cars stopped, the Nissan driver allegedly reversed and crashed into the front of the police car before driving away.
Officers followed the Nissan to Belar Ave, where the driver allegedly reversed into them again, causing extensive damage and disabling the police car.
The Nissan driver allegedly drove off a second time.
The two officers were treated by paramedics for minor injures before being transferred to John Hunter Hospital.
Detectives investigating the incident located the Nissan at Belmont North and seized it for forensic testing.
They later searched a nearby unit and seized a number of items.
The police investigation continues.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
