A neighbour said he was alerted to a fatal house fire near Maitland on Tuesday night after he heard a woman screaming out on the street.
NSW Fire and Rescue were called to the blaze on Peppertree Circuit, Aberglasslyn at 8.30pm with possible reports that a person was stuck in the garage.
Fire crews arrived at the address with the home well alight, with intense heat and smoke. There were safety concerns with the possibility it could collapse.
The body of a man was located inside the home. NSW Ambulance said despite attempts, paramedics couldn’t revive him at the scene.
One woman and a 13-year-old boy sustained minor injuries and were transported to the John Hunter Hospital as a precaution.
Fire crews surrounded the home to try to douse the blaze and committed an “offensive attack”.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, however the home sustained extensive damage.
Next door neighbour Bill Newton said he ran outside when he heard a woman screaming to find her and a teenage boy out on the street.
“I raced back inside and yelled ‘it’s on fire’. The house was well alight and flames were shooting out,” he said.
“They (fire crews) cut a hole in the door to get the fella out and on the footpath they were pumping him for 15 to 20 minutes but couldn’t bring him back.”
Port Stephens Hunter Police established a crime scene as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
