Two cops stabbed during dramatic arrest in Toronto

A 25-year-old man from Bronte in Sydney has been charged over an alleged knife attack that left two police officers seriously injured after they confronted him at a Toronto service station near Newcastle on Sunday.

One of the officers was allegedly stabbed five times in the leg and the other straight through his hand after they confronted the man over a road rage incident at the intersection of The Bourlevarde and Carey St just before 1pm.

Police allege the man used a knife to slash the tyre of a car carrying two women who had stopped at the intersection.

Police allege the officers ran from the Toronto Police Station a few doors away after hearing the triple-0 call to confront the man, who was armed with two knives, and immediately started to attack them.

The officers used capsicum spray and a baton in an attempt to disarm the man with both officers suffering stab wounds in the process.

Vision of the confrontation showed one officer swing at the shirtless man who then chased the other officer past customers filling up at the bowser.

There were initial grave concerns for one of the officers who allegedly suffered five stab wounds in the thigh, including one wound which nicked his femoral artery.

The heavy blood loss was stemmed by paramedics before he was rushed to John Hunter Hospital.

He was later released but the other officer remained in hospital with suspected nerve damage after the blade of the knife passed through his hand.

The officers fired a number of shots at the man, which missed.

The man was finally subdued by several men who saw the incident from a bus as they travelled to court-ordered community service.

He has now been charged with two counts of wound with intent to resist arrest, destroy/damage property, common assault and breach of bail for drug related offences.

He will appear at Newcastle Local Court today after being refused bail.
