Timothy Onslow pleads not guilty over alleged kidnapping that led to stabbing death in Hamilton

A Hamilton man accused of being involved in the kidnapping of a man last year, which resulted in another alleged kidnapper being stabbed to death, will stand trial in May next year.

Timothy Onslow, 25, appeared via video link from Parklea jail on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of take, detain in company to get advantage; occasion actual bodily harm and reckless grievous bodily harm in company.

Police allege Mr Onslow, Brendan Cook and Valentino Taufaao kidnapped Killian Reynolds on March 8 last year before taking him to a Coady St unit in Hamilton South, belonging to Daniel Mercer, who was the third man charged just last month.

51-year-old Taufaao, died following an altercation with Mr Reynolds, who suffered significant injuries after being bashed.

He had a manslaughter charge withdrawn in January.

In Newcastle District Court, Mr Onslow’s solicitor Mark Ramsland said two weeks should be set aside for the trial to proceed.

A date was set for May 3, 2021, with a callover set for April.

Mr Mercer is facing a charge of take or detain in company with intent to get advantage occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was granted strict conditional bail in May and his matter adjourned until July.

Mr Cook - charged with take or detain in company with intent to get advantage occasioning actual bodily harm and reckless grievous bodily harm - is back in Newcastle Local Court next week.

A charge of wound a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm will be withdrawn.
