Newcastle City police’s proactive crime team has allegedly discovered an operational clandestine lab in Shortland. Specialist police have been called in to dismantle it.

Specialist police have been called in to dismantle a clandestine drug laboratory allegedly discovered at Shortland.
Officers from the Newcastle City police district’s proactive team attended the premises about 2.30pm on Thursday and allegedly uncovered the working laboratory.
A man, 40, was arrested and later charged with manufacture and possess a prohibited drug.
He is due to face Newcastle Local Court today.
It will be alleged police uncovered a large amount of chemicals which were to be used in the making of ice.
Once the lab was allegedly discovered, police set up a crime scene and notified the drug and firearm squad’s chemical operations team.
They were due to start dismantling the lab on Friday.
Acting Newcastle City police district commander Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey praised the work of his proactive team.
“Police will always be on the lookout for drug production and where to target drug supply across the greater Newcastle area,’’ Detective Superintendent Humphrey said.
