These are the Hunter schools that have improved their NAPLAN results the most in the last five years.
An analysis of five years' worth of NAPLAN results has revealed the schools that have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.
The Hunter school that improved their Year 5 results the most between 2014 and 2018 was Carrington Public School, in Carrington, where the average results across all subjects improved by 21.1 per cent.
Average Year 9 results at St Philip's Christian College - Cessnock, in Nulkaba, increased by 4.8 per cent, the biggest improvement in Hunter.
“We’ve done a whole lot of training for our staff in developing reading comprehension skills in each of the faculties,” St Phillip’s Christian College Principal Darren Cox said.
“We’ve implemented explicit direct instructions into classrooms which looks at the implementation of daily reviews and engagement strategies and increases the pace of the lesson and ensures all students are keeping up to date.
“We also have a very open culture of ongoing professional development for staff which includes a whole heap of lesson observations followed by instructional coaching.
“That means teachers would video themselves and then reflect on that lesson with a colleague or supervisor and identifying what was positive about the lesson and identifying other areas which they could have worked on.”
“It’s about culture and creating a school that kids want to be at.
“It’s where being an individual is ok, failing is ok and when kids are in a good space mentally, then they’ll be in a good space with their learning.”
The analysis compared each school's combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2014 and compared to the same results in 2018.
Hunter's second biggest improvement in Year 5 results over those five years was St Joseph's Primary School, in Bulahdelah, where scores increased 13.9 per cent.
