Satisfaction rating survey of John Hunter Hospital shows most patients rate care good or great

The results of a Bureau of Health Information 2018 survey found that 66 per cent of John Hunter Hospital patients rated their care as very good, while 28 per cent rated their care good.

Almost all patients at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle rated their care as very good or good, according to a survey.

The results of a Bureau of Health Information 2018 survey found that 66 per cent of John Hunter Hospital patients rated their care as very good.

That’s slightly below the NSW average of 67 per cent of patients.

However, slightly more than the state average – 28 per cent – rated their care at the Newcastle hospital as good.

In total 94 per cent rated care as very good or good, bang on average.

Of patients who were surveyed at John Hunter in 2018, four per cent rated their care as neither good nor bad, one per cent poor and one per cent very poor.

This is compared with the overall results for NSW where 27 per cent rated their care as good, four per cent neither good nor bad, one per cent poor and one per cent very poor.

BHI Chief Executive, Dr Diane Watson, said most patients in NSW provided positive ratings of their experiences of care in the Adult Admitted Patient Survey.

“Overall, almost all patients (94%) rated their care as very good or good,” Dr Watson said.

“About eight in 10 patients (79%) told us they would speak highly of the care they received during their hospital stay if asked by friends and family.”

Patients were particularly positive about the healthcare professionals who delivered their care, and the results reflect notable improvements from the previous year’s survey:

• 76% of patients rated their nurses as very good – up from 71% in 2017.

• 72% rated their doctors as very good – up from 69% in 2017.

• When asked to rate how well health professionals worked together, 61% said very good – up from 58% in 2017.
