Ryhope, Cessnock Road: Elderly man injured after his car smashed into a tree
The driver of a vehicle that smashed into a tree at Ryhope on Thursday morning is in a critical condition. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital with arm, leg and pelvis injuries.

An elderly man has suffered serious injuries after his car smashed into a tree at Lake Macquarie this morning.
Emergency services were called to Cessnock Rd, Ryhope, at around 7.40am on Thursday to find a man trapped inside his vehicle which was badly damaged.
The man, believed to be in his 70s, suffered suspected fractures to both his arms and legs as well as his pelvis.
Paramedics provided him treatment before he was transported to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Brian Knowles said, “Unfortunately this man has sustained some very serious injuries, which is not uncommon with an accident like this.
“As paramedics, we have a desire to help those in need, but we encourage everyone to learn basic CPR in case they come across a crash.”
Police are investigating.
