A Sydney man has been charged with animal cruelty after a missing clydesdale horse was discovered dead on a Hunter Valley property, allegedly with a gunshot wound to its neck.
Earlier this month, Rural Crime Investigators appealed for information from the public following the disappearance of eight-year-old Stallion ‘Achilles’, who went missing on October 1 from his Putty property on Putty Valley Rd.
On October 16, Hunter Valley and Hawkesbury investigators searched a home on Putty Valley Rd where they exhumed and recovered Achilles.
After being examined by a veterinarian on site, police allege the death was caused by a gunshot wound to the neck.
A search of the Putty home also uncovered an unregistered firearm and ammunition which police claim were not stored securely.
A 36 year old man from Plumpton, who also owns the Putty property where Achilles was buried, was charged with kill stock with intent to steal, commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, use and possess unauthorised firearms, possess ammunition without permit and not keep firearm safely.
The Sydney man is due to appear at Singleton Local Court in December.
Achilles has since been laid to rest at his property.
