Police investigating a fatal crash on M1: Man dies despite attempts by a passerby to save him

Police are investigating after a vehicle travelling north on the M1 Pacific Highway, at Killingworth veered off the road before it caught alight.

An unidentified hero has tried to save a man whose car crashed into bushland before bursting into flames at Lake Macquarie Wednesday night.

At about 11.40pm, a man was killed after his vehicle, which was travelling north on the M1 Pacific Highway, near O’Donnelltown Rd, Killingworth, veered off the road and hit a number of trees.

Police said a passerby tried to remove the driver from the vehicle, but it caught alight and tragically the driver died at the scene.

Police established a crime scene as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Prior to the crash, it’s believed the man was seen driving erratically.

One of two northbound lanes on the M1 Pacific Highway were closed following the accident but hours later both lanes were again open to traffic, causing only minor delays.
