Police are on the hunt for several people who stabbed a rideshare service driver and stole his car after dumping him on a Merewether street.

The frightening ordeal early Thursday morning began with an uneventful fare from Windale to William St, Merewether.

But it turned bloody after one of the passengers produced a blade and threatened the 22-year-old driver.

The robber demanded the driver’s wallet, phone and car keys before stabbing him in the arm and leg when the victim resisted.

He was dumped on William St before the carjackers sped off.

The driver rang for assistance and was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment on his injuries, which are not considered to be life-threatening.

The car, a 2010 silver-coloured Ford Focus with registration plates BPX-15C, and the men remain outstanding.

Newcastle City detectives are investigating.
