Two youths have been arrested following two pre-dawn police pursuits through Newcastle’s inner-city which led to an alleged stolen car rolling over.

Police said a car, which had allegedly been stolen from Merewether, was seen driving erratically in Cooks Hill about 3.30am.

They allege the vehicle failed to stop before taking officers on a short pursuit before it was terminated.

A member of the dog squad saw the car again about 4.10am in Newcastle and a second chase commenced.

The vehicle crashed and rolled at the intersection of Hunter and Darby streets, coming to rest on a pedestrian strip adjacent to the Telstra building.

Police will allege the driver, a 15-year-old from Maryland, attempted to kick his door open and flee before being arrested.

A Cooks Hill boy, 14, was arrested without incident in the passenger seat.

The older youth was charged with police pursuit-drive dangerously (Skyes Law) and drive conveyance without the consent of the owners.

The other boy was charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the consent of the owner, custody of a knife, and breaching his bail conditions.
