A Central Coast man accused of the sexual abuse of a five-year-old girl in Port Stephens in April intends to plead not guilty to the charges.

The 44-year-old, who was arrested by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad at his Narara home on July 5, fronted Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday as his matter was briefly mentioned.

He was charged with two counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 10 years, following the commencement of an investigation in June.

Police allege he sexually abused the five-year-old girl while staying with her family in Nelson Bay in April.

The man’s solicitor tried to plead not guilty to both charges but was told by Magistrate Brett Shields it wasn’t yet possible with the matter being handed to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

His strict conditional bail was continued and adjourned until September.

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including allegations of sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
