Lake Macquarie: Region’s 16,000 registered guns dwarfs neighbour city Newcastle

Gun ownership seems to be a common thing for residents in Lake Macquarie with over 16,000 guns registered according to latest firearm registry data. That number three times more than gun ownership in Newcastle.

A gun owner in Lake Macquarie has made the top five in New South Wales for having the most registered firearms.

In the postcode of 2285, which covers Cameron Park, Cardiff, Edgeworth and Glendale, the latest NSW Firearms registry data has revealed one license holder was recorded as having 298 registered firearms, the fourth highest in the state.

Across NSW it was recorded that more than 234,000 people had firearm licenses from January 1 to March 31 this year, with Lake Macquarie stockpiling over 16,000 guns, three times more than Newcastle with 5,675 firearms registered.

Residents in the postcode of 2285 bought up 2724 guns in the last three months to March this year, making that area the highest for number of registered firearms across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Closely following behind were the suburbs of Wallsend, Fletcher, Maryland, Elermore Vale and surrounds - the postcode of 2287 - where over 2500 guns are registered and a whopping 2425 in the postcode of 2283 which covers Toronto and Rathmines.

Newcastle city which has 107 license holders only had 297 firearms registered, while the prestigious postcode of 2291 covering Merewether and The Junction recorded 667.

Known as the rough end of town, Windale had a lower number of firearms registered at just 84, while not far away at Charlestown, Gateshead, Dudley and surrounds stockpiled 2206, making it the fifth highest across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
