Detectives are investigating what motivated a man to storm a Jesmond home late on Tuesday and stabbed another man in the arm.
The victim, 30, was undergoing surgery in John Hunter Hospital on Wednesday as investigators searched for his attacker.
Police said the victim and two women were inside a Blue Gum Road unit when the suspect entered about 10.30pm.
A struggle ensued before the victim was stabbed in the arm with a knife and the suspect ran off.
No one else was injured.
