A Gateshead man has been lucky to escape jail time after leading police on high speed pursuits across Lake Macquarie in a stolen car at “extremely” high speeds, all while having no license.

Jamahl Dundas, 18, was charged with being unlicensed, low-range drink driving, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, police pursuit and custody of knife in public place after he decided to go on a joyride on the early morning of September 5.

He pleaded guilty to all charges in court later that month.

Police facts said the teenager stole a Volkswagon Caddy from a driveway in Warners Bay before driving it at excessive speeds through Windale, which caught the eye of a number of local residents who called police.

Soon after police were hot on the tail of Dundas as a dangerous pursuit unfolded.

In one incident, Dundas mounted the gutter in Gateshead and swerved onto a grass reserve, his vehicle also crossed over on to the wrong side of the road and narrowly avoided a collision with another car.

Police facts said Dundas finally stopped the vehicle on Violent Town Rd at Tingira Heights where he fled on foot and ran down a steep driveway jumping numerous fences and running through backyards, before being arrested hiding under another vehicle.

A search uncovered a 20cm hunting knife in pants, while a breath test revealed he had been drink driving.

The 18-year-old fronted Belmont Local Court on Monday in-front of Magistrate Peter Barnett where he was sentenced to an 18 month intensive corrections order (ICO), a jail term served within the community.

He was also slapped with a number of community correction orders (CCO’s) which he’ll serve for the next two years, 500 hours of community service, fined $500 and disqualified from driving for a period of five years.

A charge of never being licensed was withdrawn.
