Hunter schools in Broadmeadow and Newcastle topped the region for HSC results

Merewether High School is kicking goals once again, this time placing as the best school in the Hunter for Higher School Certificate (HSC) results, which were released on Tuesday morning, along with Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) later in the day.
The Broadmeadow school topped the region, recording an impressive 313 band six scores, the highest level of performance with scores between 90-100.
The school, which had 175 students doing the HSC, had the highest percentage of success rate and ranked 49th in NSW, and the best in the Hunter, for HSC performance.
Just recently, Merewether High was indicated as the top performing Hunter school for year 9 that consistently topped the state in NAPLAN results in the past five years.
“We are exceedingly proud of the efforts of our students and staff who have worked together to achieve these results,” a school spokesperson said.
“Part of the credit for this must go to our staff and part to the sheer quality of the Year 12 cohort of 2019.
“We have continued to achieve success in what I consider to be our four main school focus areas – academic excellence, student leadership, sporting and cultural excellence.
“The results our students have achieved will support them as they move into the next phase of their lives.”
Newcastle Grammar School came in at second place, ranking 55th in the state. It’s 73 HSC students managed to produce 121 band six scores.
Third on the list was Hunter Valley Grammar School at Ashtonfield which set out a superb 84 high scores.
There was also a noteworthy performance from the Hunter School of Performing Arts in Broadmeadow whose students managed 100 band six scores.
And, out of just 53 students doing the HSC, Macquarie College in Wallsend had 22 recorded high scores, ranking seventh in the Hunter.
