10 Adam MacDougall
Wing
1997-2003
Undoubtedly, Doogs would sit at No.1 if this were Newcastle’s Most Colourful Characters list. Famous for such curiosities as talking to his legs before games and also getting so worked up he threatened to internally combust. Onfield, too, the ‘Mad Dog’ was a phenomenal player. Continually the best metre-making outside back I ever played alongside.
9 Adam Muir
Backrow
1990-1997
There was a period of two or three years there in the mid 1990s where Adam was the greatest backrower on the planet. He was smart, had great speed, strong footwork and was incredibly tough. As far as running gaps and angles goes too, the best I ever played alongside.
8 Michael Hagan
Five-eighth
1989-1993
One of the club’s most crucial signings. In Hages, the Newcastle Knights not only got a world-class playmaker, but an inspirational captain. Was key in turning the club into a genuine premiership force.
7 Robbie O’Davis
Fullback
1992-2004
Perhaps the most supremely confident player I’ve ever encountered. And testimony to that was the way Robbie ‘O’ played his best games on the biggest occasions --- including winning the 1997 Clive Churchill medal. After retiring, also went on a farewell lap of Marathon Stadium so long, by the time he finished up they were marking out the field out for Round One of the next season.
6 Marc Sargent
Prop
1989-1995
Sarge was one of the club’s really crucial signings in ‘89. An outstanding forward leader from the Canterbury Bulldogs, he gave guaranteed metres every week and it was no surprise his arrival coincided with Newcastle surging up the table. In his first year at the Knights, Sarge was also joint-winner of the Rothmans Medal with Gavin Miller.
