Bushfire advice: RFS protect Belmont properties

Fire conditions at Belmont have eased as firefighters work to protect homes from a bushfire at Merleview street.

Welcome to The Newcastle News

Conditions have eased and lowered the threat of the bushfire at Belmont which threatened homes on Thursday night.

The blaze is burning to the east of Merleview Street Belmont but NSW Rural Fire Service fire crews have worked overnight to back burn areas to help contain the fire.

Residents in the area of Goulding Ave, Railway Crescent, Kalaroo Road, John Darling Ave, John Fisher Road and Siloam Dr should continue to monitor the situation.

Today crews will continue to work on containing the fire, using favourable conditions to undertake direct attack and backburning where required.

Earlier on Thursday an emergency warning was issued by the RFS as homes came under threat from the out of control blaze.

Under windy conditions, the RFS warned the fire could be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast-moving.

Winds have dropped to around 35km/h across the fireground and where possible, crews will undertake backburning to contain the fire.

RFS warned embers could be blown ahead of the fire, creating spot fires that will move quickly and in different directions and may threaten homes.
