An East Maitland man, who attacked a woman with a screwdriver at the traffic lights, has escaped time behind bars, immediately lodging an appeal after being sentenced to jail time.

Dean Jackson Asimus – whose social media profile features an array of cars and pictures of burnouts – is behind two violent road rage incidents late last year and early this year.

In the first incident on September 24, the 22-year-old was merging his Holden Commodore onto the M1 Motorway at Lenaghan when he cut off another vehicle.

The other driver furiously beeped his horn after he was forced to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision, according to police facts.

But Asimus didn’t like that at all, again applying his brakes “harshly” and when the driver tried to overtake, he sped up before hanging out the driver window with a crowbar and smashing it into the other vehicle.

Police facts said he was smiling and laughing before he sped off.

In the second incident on February 6, Asimus attacked a 49-year-old woman at the traffic lights on the Newcastle Link Rd at Cameron Park.

He got out of the car with a 30 centimetre industrial style screwdriver and struck her several times on the arm.

Police facts then said he slammed the door closed and smashed the weapon into the driver’s rear side panel, before swinging it into the rear tail light.

Several concerned motorists got out to help, but Asimus returned to his vehicle and sped off.

He caused more than $1000 worth of damage to the vehicle. Days later he was arrested.

Asimus has pleaded guilty to common assault, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, two counts of destroy/damage property, driver manner dangerous and two counts of stalk and intimidate.

In Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, Magistrate David Price warned he should prepare to go to jail for his offences.

Later that day he was sentenced to imprisonment but was released on bail after lodging an immediate severity appeal.

He’ll return to court in November for a hearing in a bid to overturn his jail time.
