Following last night’s devastating news of a massive shut-down, Hunter’s pubs and clubs were left shocked and devastated.

Ordered to close their doors by midday on Monday, the drastic measures implemented by the Federal Government will aim to stop the spread of the deadly COVID-19.

“This is a sad day for more Australians with the shut-down of an Aussie institution for the first time in our history,” President of the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) Newcastle Hunter Rolly De With said.

Mr De With said to ensure social distancing legislation is adhered to, venues across the region have closed, as they follow the instructions of the Government and medical experts.

Notices were pasted across a number of local venues today, informing patrons of the shut-down.

At Wests in New Lambton, notices on the door read, “In line with government imposed restrictions, we are temporarily closed until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused”.

Mr De With said there’s no doubt, it’s already having a devastating impact on the local workforce and patrons.

“Our hoteliers and their staff are obviously devastated – we are doing all we can for them.

“This closure comes at a huge financial cost. Many ongoing bills will still need to be paid while pubs are not able to trade.

“This is not life as we know it, but what we do know for certain, is that we are all in it together.”

While Hunter venues won’t be open to pub goers, they can however offer some services, including take away meals, bottle shops, accommodation and some meal delivery services.

“Services will vary from venue to venue so please check with your local as to how they plan to navigate the road that lies ahead for all of us,” De With added.

“At this time, we ask that you treat yourself, those you love, and members of the community with respect and consideration.

“It is only together that we can endure these unprecedented times and overcome what adversity may remain ahead.”
