Calls for teacher to be sacked after heated school classroom discussion on rape

There are calls for a teacher in the Newcastle area to be ‘fired’ after she made controversial comments regarding rape in a school classroom. SEE THE VIDEO.

Students call out a teacher for saying 'what girls wear can lead to rape'

A video posted to social media about a heated class discussion regarding rape, has created controversy for a school in the Newcastle area.

In a bid to avoid repercussions, a local high school student asked a friend to post a video to Facebook showing clear disgust on the comments made by her teacher.

“I felt like what she was saying was completely in-appropriate,” she said.

The Newcastle News has been told students were learning about the 1950s until now in class when it sparked the debate.

“The teacher asked us what we would like to learn about in this topic and we said fashion and how that’s changed,” she added.

“She said nothing has really changed besides what girls decide to go out in and then got on the topic of mini-skirts and about a girl that got raped in Newcastle.”

In the video a passionate female student spoke up in the discussion, strongly debating what the teacher had to say.

“It doesn’t matter what she is wearing, it was a lack of consent regardless. Even if she put herself out there, she said no,” the student can be heard saying.

The teacher replied: “Yes it does matter, it does. I’m not saying you need to dress to suit what other people want.”

A male student also added, “It does to an extent.”

The friend who posted the video to social media adding, “This teacher claims that the female rape victims should be held accountable due to the way they dress. Those women were not raped because their skirts were too short that day. Rape is caused by rapists.

“She continued to say the next day that all men have to fight their urges everyday to not sexually assault or abuse us.

“Don’t claim that posting this video is ruining our school reputation, when multiple statements have been made against this teacher and nothing has been done. That issue is what will ruin your school’s reputation.”

The female year 10 student said another student originally tried to post it but was ordered by the school to take it down.

That’s when she asked a friend to post it for her.

It generated plenty of attention, with more than 600 shares, 800 interactions and hundreds of comments which continue to grow.

“This is what I was hoping for, I felt like everyone else wasn’t going to have something to say about it and no one was going to take a stand so that is what I decided to do,” the high school student said.

“I’m glad it has got all the attention it has. I just want her to know that she is not allowed to discuss that.

“I think it is disgusting, she was saying women need to take accountability for the clothes they were wearing. Woman are not the cause of rape, it is the men that decide to rape, even women who decide to rape.

“And the fact she was saying all men have the urge to rape women and fight that urge every day.”

The student has been applauded for her courage in getting the post out to the public, even from her parents.

“I’ve got women saying we’re very strong and powerful for doing this, and I’m getting messages and followers saying it needed to be said, you said it brilliantly,” she added.

Majority of the comments were outraged by what the teacher said, while others praised the female student for speaking out.

“Patriarchal, misogynistic indoctrinated, institutionalised rape culture in practice,” one Facebook user said.

“To the young girl fighting out against the teacher, we are all here to support you,” another said.

“The blame is with rapists, always, no debate needed, no questions asked.” a woman commented.

Other comments called for the teacher to be stood down.

“This teacher should be reprimanded,” a woman said.

“This teacher needs to be fired,” another woman added.

“The teacher could clearly learn a lot from her students,” one man said.

Although some made comments about ensuring the context of the video was understood completely.

A spokesperson from the NSW Department of Education said the matter was currently being investigated.

“The teacher is not on class today (Friday) and counselling support is available to students.”
