A man who admitted to savagely kidnapping and raping an 11-year-old girl at Adamstown Heights in a five hour ordeal last year, has pleaded guilty to three charges he had previously denied.
Brett David Hill, 48, showed no emotion as he pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated sexual assault at Newcastle District Court on Wednesday, with each charge carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail.
Hill was expected to face trial on Monday, but it was delayed after he was hospitalised and unable to attend court.
On Wednesday morning, Crown prosecutor Lee Carr SC and Hill’s defence barrister Andrew Norrie engaged in discussions before Hill made late guilty pleas to three charges. The Crown also withdrew four charges which included aggravated indecent assaults.
In September he was granted a judge-alone trial due to the potential for prejudicial publicity because of significant interest by local media.
However, he will now be sentenced in Newcastle District Court on December 17.
After a date had been set for Hill’s sentencing, Mr Carr said the parents wanted to express their thanks to the community following the ordeal.
He also told the court they wanted to thank the efforts of Westfield Kotara staff for the hours and hours of footage they went through of the surrounding area to help in the case.
Previously, Hill admitted to abducting the Newcastle schoolgirl on her way to school through Hudson Park on June 12, 2018, and sexually assaulting her repeatedly in nearby bushland, during a five-hour ordeal.
Hill had previously pleaded guilty to charges, including aggravated sexual assault, detaining a person for advantage and possession of child abuse material.
