Lake Macquarie is set to be rev-head heaven this weekend with Australia’s most powerful superboats thundering across the water for two exhilarating days of racing action.
It’s round three of the Offshore Superboat Championships, with super-sleek vessels set to reach blistering speeds of up to 200km/h as they navigate their way around a 7km course starting at Marmong Point Marina.
Conn Saloumidis from the Simrad SUV race team is predicting 40,000 people to flock to the region, with plenty of awesome vantage points for people to catch all the heart-pumping action.
“Expect lots of superboats going between Marmong Point Marina which is the hub of it, to Warners Bay,” Mr Saloumidis said.
“Anywhere there is the walking track around there, there is an awesome outlook and vantage points to see the action.”
And for the first time Simrad SUV will be piloted by Lake Macquarie boating identity and Marmong Point Marina owner Les Binkin.
A “stunning” track, Mr Saloumidis said the Lake Macquarie event is a magnificent race, with plenty of other action to compliment the weekend.
“If we get good weather, we’ll get heaps of people down there watching the superboats - there’s also the car show, the food and wine festival, jet skis, it’s going to be out of control,” he said.
“We’re crazy but those guys (jet skis) are crazier and they put on a fantastic show and that’s between Eleebana and Warners Bay.
“Heaps of vintage and historic cars, Sunday should be 300 or more cars at Speers Point.
“The whole of the foreshore between Warner’s Bay and Marmong Point is going to be rev-head heaven, coming from Sydney, Brisbane, all over Australia.”
The superboats will race at 1.20pm on Saturday and twice on Sunday – at 11am and 1pm.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said action on the water would continue throughout the weekend, with junior boat categories racing the superboat course on both days, and jet-ski racing 10am to 3pm both days from Lions Park at Eleebana.
“Community events like the Superboat Championships bring so much vibrancy to our City,” Cr Fraser said.
“They activate our lake foreshore and bring our community and visitors together to celebrate what we love about Lake Mac.”
On Saturday, free family water sports will be on offer at Marmong Point Sailing Club while Speers Point Park will host a noon-8pm Food and Wine Festival.
The Show and Shine contest is at Speers Point Park on Sunday, and aerobatic displays over the lake at 11.45am Saturday, and 9.45am and 11.45am Sunday.
