THE State Government has committed $25 million for a new police station at Mt Druitt and, if all goes to plan, it could be operating by 2018.
Mt Druitt police station, one of the state’s oldest, has not been upgraded since it first opened in 1975.
A demountable was erected on the site in 2005 to help the station cope with growth.
A spokeswoman for Police Minister Troy Grant confirmed the money had been committed for the project and a development application was expected to be lodged early in 2017. “The Government has committed $25 million towards building a new police station at Mt Druitt,” she said. “(A total of) $750,000 has been allocated in the 2016-17 budget.
“The NSW Police Force approved a business case for the Mt Druitt police station in August 2016.
“NSW Police Force anticipates that construction will commence in late 2017, with a possible completion in late 2018 or early 2019.”
The long-overdue upgrade was an election promise announced by Premier Mike Baird in March last year.
The Premier was accused of breaking the promise following his government’s first budget which failed to allocate funds for the new station.
