TALENTED gymnast Jack Hall has capped off a successful year by winning the Mt Druitt-St Marys Standard Junior Sports Star award.

The athlete was named the paper’s winner during a special gala dinner at the Epping Club on Thursday night.

Hall, who trains at Sydney Gymnastic and Aquatic Centre, has been a regular winner of state and national titles, and has also ­competed internationally in artistic gymnastics disciplines including rings, parallel bars and vault.

Rugby league player Jeremiah Vaisima was also named the Mt Druitt-St Marys Standard’s Young Sporting Spirit recipient.

Vaisima, who was diagnosed with tetralogy of fallot at birth - a congenital heart defect which was treated with open-heart surgery, has overcome more than most to play the sport he loves.

He also had another operation in 2014 to remove a membrane behind his heart which was putting pressure on it.

He made a full recovering and loves playing league with Doonside Junior Rugby League Club.

“It’s fun to play and it challenges you each week,” he said.

“The good part is meeting new people all the time.”

Now in their 13th year, the Local Sports Star awards - sponsored by Rebel - turn the spotlight on outstanding young athletes with nominees publicised each week in NewsLocal’s community newspapers across Sydney and the Central Coast.

The overall winner on the night was Bendere Oboya. The 17-year-old Ethiopian-born athletics ace is sizzling her way towards representing Australia at next year’s Commonwealth Games after a golden 2017. She won the 400m at the Athletics NSW Open Championships in February, just a year into training for the sport, and then secured two gold medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas in July.

Also attending the gala dinner was a number of talented athletes and former winners including Matildas footballer Ellie Carpenter and Olympic kayak medallist Jessica Fox.
