Construction work on the long-overdue upgrade to Rooty Hill station could begin as early as July.
Four lifts, a new pedestrian bridge and a multi-level commuter carpark are among the approved works detailed in the NSW transport department’s determination report.
The document says Rooty Hill was prioritised over Doonside railway station because it is not compliant with the Disablity Standards for Accessible Public Transport and the upgrade would bring it into line with the standards.
The report said “the existing platforms are only accessible via stairs thus it does not provide suitable access for people with disabilities, with limited mobility and parents with prams”.
A Transport NSW spokesman said construction would begin later this year.
“The contract to design and construct the upgrade to Rooty Hill Station is expected to be awarded in the coming weeks,” he said.
“Early works for the project including detailed design, installing site offices and platform hoardings, and survey work will commence shortly after.”
Mt Druitt state Labor MP Edmond Atalla welcomed the recommendation.
“I hope that the government gets on with construction without any further delays,” Mr Atalla said.
“Some of the community feedback I received is concerned with abolishing the ramps and in the event of lift breakdowns, access to the station will be unavailable.
“Overall community feedback has been very positive and the community is looking forward to the upgrade including the new parking as soon as possible.
“With the adjacent seniors living on Rooty Hill Road Sth nearing completion, there has never been a more urgent need to get this upgrade done now.”
