Redfern family appeal for help to find missing teen Monica Maguire who may have met young man on Snapchat

THE family of missing teenager Monica Maguire of Redfern have made a desperate plea for her to return home as the anniversary of her mother’s death approaches.

THE family of missing teenager Monica Maguire of Redfern have made a desperate plea for her to return home.

Monica, 14, was reported missing more than a month ago after she failed to return home on Wednesday, August 3. She has not contacted family or friends since then.

The family said they think she met a young male on the social media Snapchat app and they are living together on the NSW South Coast.

Her grandmother Carolyn Mareno said on the night Monica went missing she told them she was going to the Girls Brigade in nearby Redfern but never showed up.

Mrs Mareno had urged her to stay home as it was raining that night.

“When I got home she wasn’t there and that's when I went looking for her,” she said.

“I went to Girl’s Brigade looking for her about 7pm and they said she never came.

Mrs Mareno said Monica had been in a fight at school the day she went missing.

“She had a big fight at school on the day which may have sparked it — we want her to know that we love her and her school loves her and we can sort it out.”

The family believe she packed a small bag of clothes but Mrs Mareno said she did not have any money.

“After she went missing she posted a picture of a guy on Snapchat, people told me about it because they were concerned

“Her friends are very worried about her — she met this stranger on social media.”

The grandmother said Monica’s mother was told she is on the NSW South Coast and is believed to be residing with a young male.

Mrs Mareno holds grave concerns for Monica’s welfare as this week is the two-year anniversary of her mother’s death.

“The 9th of September is her mother’s anniversary of her death, and Monica has mentioned she was upset about this before.

“Me and her great nan can’t handle it much more we are very sick and worried and we have a hard week ahead of us.

“Please come home — we love you, please ring us so we can hear your voice and know you are OK — great nan is missing you terribly.”

Police from Redfern LAC said Monica was last seen wearing a black padded jacket with a hood, black or grey pants, and black ‘Nike’ sneakers with the logo on the tongue of the shoe.

Monica is described as being of caucasian appearance, of medium build, with a fair complexion and long dark brown hair.
Monica has been known to frequent the Mt Druitt, Sydney CBD, Blue Mountains and the NSW South Coast and has previous resided in Avalon in Sydney’s northern beaches.
