THE first little penguin chicks of the season have hatched at Featherdale Wildlife Park and they are beyond cute.
When fully grown, the aquatic birds are a dark blue colour with a white chest and can to live in a warm climate.
“Most people think they need to live in Antarctica but they can handle Sydney’s summers and winters,” Featherdale’s director of life sciences Chad Staples said.
Mr Staples said while they are the smallest penguin species, they have “much bigger personalities than their (small) bodies would suggest”.
“At breeding time they become very vocal and they display to each other,” he said.
Little penguins are known to mate for life and can live up to 20 years old.
With five mating pairs, Featherdale’s is the largest breeding colony in Sydney.
The public can visit the park’s newest Little penguins any day at 217 Kildare Rd, Doonside.
