LOCAL families will be able to escape summer’s sweltering heat by making a splash at an overhauled green space in Erskine Park.
Phoenix Reserve’s impressive new play area will feature jets shooting out water to refresh hot and bothered youngsters.
A Penrith Council spokesman said the suburb’s $140,000 addition should be up and running before the end of November.
“The splash pad is part of a broader range of improvements inclusive of substantial new pathways, picnic shelters, new furniture and landscaping,” the spokesman said.
“These works complement the new playground equipment already on site and will offer the community a wonderful range of play spaces and experiences.”
The project falls under the council’s Cooling the City strategy, which has already seen trees planted as shading in the region and another splash pad installed at Werrington Lakes Reserve.
But the council spokesman said Erskine Park’s facility was expected to be almost double in size.
Residents have welcomed the news, after years of lobbying for more local places to cool down.
Lisa A’Beckett, of Erskine Park, was thrilled to hear the splash pad would soon roll into the area.
The mother of two boys, aged five and eight, said the family usually travelled to Wet’n’Wild Sydney or Doonside’s Nurragingy Reserve to cool off but it “will be nice” to take them to a local outdoor water feature on hot days.
“We went to the one at Werrington in the holidays and the kids loved it because they played and went for a bike ride and then when they got hot they went for a splash,” Ms A’Beckett said.
“I am really excited because (Phoenix Reserve) is less than 1km from my house.”
The temperature is expected to reach 30C on Sunday, signalling a warm start to the approaching summer months.
