Colyton’s Kane Shorter is not your average lawn bowler

At just 14 years of age, Kane Shorter is not your average lawn bowler.

Caitlin Robinson and Kane Shorter have been selected for the lawn bowls junior state development squad.

At just 14 years of age, Kane Shorter is not your average lawn bowler.

The Colyton teenager began bowling six years ago after his grandparents bought over a set of bowls to the house.

And he hasn't looked back since then.

Kane was recently selected to be part of the NSW Silver Squad, his biggest success to date and a sign that is talent has been identified at the highest level.

This week Kane is in Wallsend, near Newcastle, representing Sydney West in the Combined High Schools lawn bowls competition.

Kane trains with the Kingswood Bowling Club’s junior squad.

He also coaches and plays in his school competition.

Chris Gillespie, of Kingswood Bowling Club, said Kane was one of the club’s most promising young players.

“He is probably one of our leading juniors ... he has got a hell of a lot of potential,” Mr Gillespie said.
“Lawn bowls is a Commonwealth Games sport so the development of our juniors is very important.

“It is very prestigious for them to be selected in this squad.”

Kane’s mother Louise Shorter said she was very proud of her son’s efforts.

“He coaches, and he plays at school and on the weekends,” Mrs Shorter said.

“He is very dedicated.”

As part of the talented athlete program at Kingswood High School, Mrs Shorter said Kane was often called upon to miss class to compete.

“He always makes time for school too, and always asks for more work while he is away,” Mrs Shorter said.

“We are very proud of his commitment and attitude.”

In light of Kane’s success, Kingswood Sports Club general manager Nathan Lowe said the club would be donating an addition $1500 to their junior bowlers, including Kane.

“Kane and our other junior bowlers will be able to access this grant — this will help cover both travel and expesnses,” Mr Lowe said.
