A Belmont North man is behind bars after he used a hunting knife to threaten a stranger who tried to intervene in a domestic dispute.
Zac Halliday, 23, appeared in Belmont Local Court via video link from jail on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to intimidation, property damage and custody of a knife in a public place.
He pleaded not guilty to hindering or resisting police and unlawfully obtained goods in custody, stemming from the same chain of events on April 28.
In court documents police said Halliday and his girlfriend had been driving through Swansea about 11am, when an argument prompted the woman to get out of the car at the intersection of Parbury and Richardson roads.
Halliday also exited the vehicle and produced a hunting knife which he used to slash a fence, before a man from a nearby property stepped in and asked Halliday’s girlfriend if she was OK.
“The accused said ‘f**k off, this is none of your business’,” court documents said.
“The victim again asked the female if she was OK.
“The accused at this point has turned at the victim and walked within one-point-five metres of him.
“The accused was seen holding a knife in his right hand, and pointed the knife out toward the victim.
“The accused said ‘f**k off mate, you’re gone otherwise’.”
The documents said the man retreated, fearing he would be stabbed, but noted Halliday’s licence plate number and called triple-0.
Police allege when Halliday was stopped a short time later, he was “argumentative, refusing to listen” and had to be pulled from the car through its window.
Police allege Halliday had the hunting knife and a large carving knife in the footwell of the car, as well as about $9000 cash hidden on him.
He’ll return to court in December.
