A man accused of stabbing his ex-partner and a young mum to death in a frenzied attack at her own home has pleaded not guilty to her murder.
Police allege Tyrone Thompson, 23, unleashed on former girlfriend Mackenzie Anderson, 21, at her Mayfield unit on March 25, 2022, by stabbing her more than 20 times and stomping on her head before he left her to die on the front lawn.
Police allege Thompson attacked Ms Anderson at about 10:40pm that night after spending a large part of the day drinking with her inside her Crebert St apartment.
By the time police arrived the wounded young mother had crawled to the veranda outside her home and, despite the best efforts of officers to revive her, she could not be saved.
Thompson was arrested nearby, taken to John Hunter Hospital with a hand wound and held under police guard.
In Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday Thompson appeared via video link where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and contravening an apprehended violence order (AVO) between March 24 and 25, which will be a related charge.
The charge of aggravated enter dwelling knowing people were there has been withdrawn.
Thompson will be arraigned in Sydney’s Supreme Court in April for a trial date to be set.
