The man who tragically lost his life in a unit fire in inner-city Newcastle has been identified, as friends and family remembered him as a “wonderful man”.

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a ‘wonderful man’ after a devastating fire ripped through his inner-city unit in Newcastle on Monday.

Troy Morrison – affectionately known as aunty Troy – tragically succumbed to significant burns and could not be saved after the blaze engulfed his unit on Colliers Cl in Newcastle East just before 4pm.

Seven fire trucks and 24 firefighters arrived to help extinguish the blaze before the 60-year-old was found inside.

The unit was “severely damaged” and no one else was found inside the unit.

His niece Mikayla Nichols was devastated by the news and told this publication her uncle had lived in the units for about 15 years.

“He always had a smile on his face and would always love a good chat with anyone,” she said.

“He is a wonderful man and taught me how to walk and talk.”

Friends also took to social media to post tributes.

“RIP my sweet darling friend Troy I can’t believe that happened. I’m going to miss you,” a woman said

Expert Fire and Rescue NSW investigators and forensic police attended the scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

The fire is believed not to be suspicious.
